Match Report: Colts U9’s 4 Mortonville Wanderers 0

Certainly this was one of the better performances of the season, with Colts taking on another team from the Buckingham outfit called Mortonville. They rarely put out a bad team, so are always a good yardstick for us to gauge our abilities against. This is the second Mortonville team to visit us this year, and the second to go away with a 4-0 defeat against their name.

The visitors started strongly with the very agile number 10 waltzing through the ranks of Colts midfield and defenders in the opening minute. However, as was often the case during the first half, he took on one player too many and lost the ball. Colts defenders – Harry and Luke the first half, with added Ashley in the second – all worked hard, closed down well, and tackled superbly. This was the bedrock for the Colts win.

Possession was probably pretty even between the teams, but with that high quality defending, and good passing work going forward Colts always looked the team most likely to score. The visitor’s goalkeeper was certainly the one with the heavy workload. Josh G was the one player to find the target in the first half, giving Colts a 1-0 advantage at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Colts defence standing firm and making many excellent tackles, whilst the going forward it was only Colts that were passing the ball and moving, with Wanderers relying heavily on single player breaks. The match was certainly excellent evidence, if any were needed, that the team that can pass the ball and use the space is always the more likely to win the game!

Further chances were created by Colts, with Josh G eventually adding goals two and three as the home team stretched away from Mortonville.

Whilst Josh G might have stolen the show with his three goals, if we had a “Man of the Match” award it would surely have gone to Ryan, who has recently taken to the central midfield role really well. He really did run the game with many tackles and challenges in the midfield, some excellent runs, and some superb passes. You really did want him to cap this fine display with a goal. Sadly, it wasn’t to be this week, but goals will surely come from him playing in this position.

James returned in the second half with significantly more grit about his game, and this was rewarded with his sixth goal of the season in the last minute of the game to finish off a fine team performance.
